If in doubt use "der" - it sufficiently covers all three bases :)) Seriously though, I do think we have a responsibility to publish our language correctly, but the fundamental problem seems to be recognising that you have made a mistake in the first place. Although I don't consider myself the best writer in the world, I can't stand to see when the wrong form of "they're," "their," "there," and so on used.
